Directed Writing

Read the supplied material, select relevant information, then use, develop and evaluate it for the required audience, purpose and form.

Forms: speech, email, report, letter or article. Modes: discursive, argumentative or persuasive. Target length: about 250–350 words.

Descriptive Writing

Create a vivid person, place or situation, including atmosphere. Organise details deliberately; use precise sensory imagery rather than turning the piece into a plot-heavy story.

Narrative Writing

Tell a coherent story through connected events. Control viewpoint, pacing, paragraphing and detail so the narrative develops rather than becoming a list of events.

Composition target: about 350–450 words.
